Wow! What don’t I like about Rachel Roy!! She presents a small collection for Fall 2008, but it really packs a punch!! So many really strong and powerful pieces. I love her “visual eye”. The colors, fabric, accessories and the ”dashes” of feathers for interest, takes this collection exactly where it needs to go in my book, to the top!! One could easily corporate every piece into their wardrobe. It classic pieces with a warm edge to them - sooo chic!! Though her collection is more likely than not out of my price range, its give me a nice palette to look at and some interesting ideas for future outfits. I love everything! Noooooo!!
Apparel and accessories maker Liz Claiborne Inc. has hired Isaac Mizrahi as its creative director (brand design and marketing) in an effort to rejuvenate the brand. Isaac is ending his contract with Target and will debut his first collection for Liz Clairborne Spring of 2009. Now, I’m wondering how and with who will Target replace Mizrahi. I enjoyed his line at Target and bought quite a few really nice pieces.
This is kinda disappointing, but Target is in such a good place right now (despite low sales projections during the month of December). I’m sure there are quite a few designers who would love the opportunity to “rise to the top” as Isaac has over the past 5 years with Tarjay. His successful partnership with Target brought in roughly $300 million in sales annually and it bought his own namesake line 5 year ago out same lackluster condition Liz Clairborne is in today. Target fought hard to keep IM but could not match Liz Clairborne’s offer.
Here is my take on this as a consumer: Those who have read through this blog, know am a big Target fan! If I wanted a nice crisp, classic outfit with a little punch I could always count on Isaac Mizrahi line with Target. I knew where ever there was a Target store, I could run in and pick up one of his outfits on the fly for under $50 bucks. I mean you just couldn’t beat that! Now, I don’t think I’m going to be running to crowded Mall to hit Macy’s or wherever else Liz Clairborne is sold (see, I can’t even think of any other big department stores that carry the LC line) looking for Isaac’s designs. I think it was the convenience of the 1) Target store, 2) the pricing of his collection and 3) the visability via target.com and 4) the heavy advertising and attention Target gave his product. Those four factors is what gave Isaac his edge. Not to mention that younger women had alot more access to his collection because everything was in one strategic place within the apparel dept at Target. So mothers AND daughters were buyers. With Liz Clairborne his designs will be relegated to the “Misses” or “Petite” section of the store “out of view” from the Juniors and teen shoppers and the price point will, of course be higher taking him out of the “cheap chic” market which has been quite successful for him via Tarjay. In a nutshell all of the elements that made his collection “work” will not be there with Liz Clairborne.
You now I got to go back to the old tried and true saying ” if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”, “don’t move, improve!” I think this is a risky move for Isaac and no doubt I hate that he is leaving Target. But I’m however, very excited to find out who Target will signs on as their new in-house designer.
Two models turned fashion design duo is Milla Jovovich and partner Carmen Hawk. They are next Go International Designers for Target.com Jovovich-Hawk will debut their collection for target this Spring. Target will be carrying a lower-priced junior themed line of Jovovich-Hawk starting in Spring 2008. Milla will be shooting a TV commercial for the collection in Los Angeles, which will be shown during the New York Mercedes Benz Fall ‘08 Fashion Week. Milla says: “Our Target line will have all our classic pieces: smock dresses, tunics, minis, all vintage-inspired, great prints. We took the things that sold the best for us but we’re doing it on a bigger scale. To be able to do it with a big company that can afford to do it for a good price so that real girls can afford it. That’s the reason we were interested.”
I’m hoping this line will be more up my alley. I always get excited about the Go collections, but once I get in the store and try stuff on, it just doesn’t work out for me. Perhaps this time around it will be different (keep telling myself that). Always the fashion optimist. Update: Don’t see much here for me but the boots, oh well!
